The first thing you should know about a freshwater pearl is where they can be found. They grow in non salty environment in freshwater mussels. Currently the leader in freshwater pearl harvesting is China. Freshwater pearls have been harvested in China since the 13th century.

One of the main reason for the popularity of a freshwater pearl is the wide variety of shapes and colors. They also are cheaper then salt water pearls. The other big attraction to a freshwater pearl is they are durable. It is hard to chip and degeneration is slower.

The freshwater pearls you fine today are of much better quality then those found just several decades ago. The pearls now come from Triangle shell mussel. They produce higher quality pearls then the ones found in the Cockscomb pearl mussel, which was used until the mid 1990s. Pearls quality have also increased since the lower number of grafts inserted into either valve. The graft insertion rate has dropped by 5 per valve in just the last decade.
